What do George Ziengenfuss and Steve Fisher have in common?

Well, one was and the other is the Head coach of the SDSU Basketball program. Ziengenfuss was the head men’s basketball coach at San Diego State University from 1948 until 1969. He tallied 316 wins and five conference championships during his twenty-two year tenor as head coach. He was a Basketball purist; a consummate purveyor of the game’s fundamentals.

“He was a taskmaster,” Finlay said of Ziegenfuss. “Everything he did was very precise and well-organized. In practice, he used to have us play one-on-one for seven minutes and then we would practice full-court passes for three minutes. No one else practiced that. He had his stopwatch out, moving from drill to drill. He was very stern.” Source UT Online.

Steve Fisher is a mere 66 wins away from eclipsing a once seemingly insuperable record. If the Aztecs continue their on-the-court successes, Fisher could eclipse the total wins record within the next three years. Coincidentally, Fisher recently signed a four year extension that keeps him at the helm until 2014-15 season; the timing could not have been better. With three years remaining on his contract, he is well within striking distance of the record. In his 12 seasons, Fisher has compiled a record of 250 wins at San Diego State and ranks second all-time for most coaching wins in school history, trailing only George Ziegenfuss (316-229). Ziegenfuss passed away at the age of 90 in 2007.
