Aztecs Imploding: Are they who we thought they were?

Aztecs Imploding: Are they who we thought they were?

The Aztecs by all accounts were a team that most thought were going to be “rebuilding” this year. But as it turned out they started the season better than most thought; however, that perception began its downward spiral back on January 28th against Colorado and has continued ever since. Most considered the loss to Colorado to be Fatigue related; maybe so, but I didn’t necessarily see it that way. I just had a hunch (a … Read entire article »

SDSU to play UCONN in a 4-year series beginning in 2013

Two teams with a combined five Final Four appearances will begin to appear on San Diego State’s schedule starting in the 2013-2014 season. Memphis (NCAA Tournament runners-up in 2008) and Connecticut (the team that defeated the Aztecs last year en route to the national championship) will begin a four-year series with SDSU once San Diego State joins the Big East in football and joins the Big West for all other sports in 2013. The Tigers—who are leaving Conference USA for the Big East in all sports starting in 2013—did not have a say in scheduling the series. As part of its move to the power basketball conference, Memphis had to agree on the four-year series, playing two games at Viejas Arena during that span. But The Tigers did not mind. ”I think obviously … Read entire article »

UNLV and the Officials “Steal” a game from SDSU!

UNLV and the Officials “Steal” a game from SDSU!

It was a typical game at the Thomas and Mack arena, UNLV and the biased Officials “steal” a game from SDSU. WOW what a terrible officiating crew. I hope this crew isn’t at the MWC tournament; otherwise, might as well hand the Pebels the championship. Coupled that with SDSU careless play (16 turnovers) with the ball (3 in the final 40 seconds), the Aztecs should have won the game (Out scored UNLV 34-28 in the … Read entire article »

Aztecs win in “convincing” fashion-finally!

Aztecs win in “convincing” fashion-finally!

Aztecs come out strong to win their 20th game by beating TCU convincingly behind the superman-like acrobatics of Jamaal Franklin. The Aztecs have now secured their 20th win in 7 straight seasons; that’s impressive. The turn around could not have come at a better time. After playing three horrendous games against middling teams, the Aztecs are now back on track heading into the big show down against their arch nemesis UNLV. “As upset with the victory … Read entire article »

Aztecs sloppy but grind out a win-barely!

Not good. Just not good! Is it a carry over from Colorado? Not sure, but the Aztecs just do not look good. They seem stiff and slow in transition; moreover, hestitant and fraught with poor judgement. This errant play began at Wyoming and it hasn’t vaporized. They were 31 percent, 15/48 from the field against Boise, that’s five less buckets than at Colorado State. The Aztecs are held for 9 minutes before scoring-WOW! Not sure why they cant hit the basket. Xavier, he just seems lost; its as if he is still trying to find his way home from Wyoming. Yet, the bench comes through with ardent defense to keep the Aztecs in  the game. Free throws win it for them but that won’t cut it in the tourny! Bottom line … Read entire article »

Aztec’s give Colorado State a Gift

It was ugly; they were tired, and to say the least the effort was lackadaisical at best. SDSU looked pathetic; and, more importantly they showed little effort what-so-ever: Xavier Thames, James Rahon and Tapley were a combined 6 for 36. Kudos to Jamaal for a great individual effort, but one man does not make a team. Colorado Sate’s timing could not have been better; they found SDSU when they were at their most vulnerable. Despite what Fisher had to say, travel to and from Wyoming given the fiasco that occurred getting there, and then going back to play at altitude against a desperate team a couple of days later was simply a recipe for disaster. This is a bad loss and will hurt SDSU considerably. Look for the Aztec’s to fall at least 5 … Read entire article »

What do George Ziengenfuss and Steve Fisher have in common?

What do George Ziengenfuss and Steve Fisher have in common?

Well, one was and the other is the Head coach of the SDSU Basketball program. Ziengenfuss was the head men’s basketball coach at San Diego State University from 1948 until 1969. He tallied 316 wins and five conference championships during his twenty-two year tenor as head coach. He was a Basketball purist; a consummate purveyor of the game’s fundamentals. “He was a taskmaster,” Finlay said of Ziegenfuss. “Everything he did was very precise and well-organized. Aztec’s win ugly shoot’s down Air Force!

It wasn’t pretty; in fact, in some instances is was down right ugly. Sloppy transition play the led to errant run-and-guns by SDSU kept Air Force close during most of the game. Going scoreless fior 6:05 minute stretch highlighted by Rahon missing three free throws. Finally, they decided to play their game with dribble-drives and strength in the paint. LB makes a great cross-over and beuatiful runner to score two! Then Tapley gets three consecutive driving lay-ups to finish off Air Force. Aztec’s win 57-44 in front of another sellout at Vejas Arena; 10 consecutive wins now leading the conference by one full game. Deshawn Stephans is starting to show confidence; getting better game-by-game and his free throws are finally starting to fall; going 4-4 at the charity stripe and finishing with … Read entire article »

Air Force at San Diego State

San Diego State received just a single vote in the AP preseason poll after last season’s trip to the NCAA regional semifinals, an indication of the rebuilding job many felt Steve Fisher faced after losing his top four scorers. Turns out the 16th-ranked Aztecs might be capable of an even deeper run this March. Coming off perhaps the program’s two best victories of the season, San Diego State tries to avoid a letdown and extend its winning streak to 10 on Saturday night against visiting Air Force. Kawhi Leonard, Malcolm Thomas, Billy White and D.J. Gay are all gone from the team that gave eventual national champion Connecticut all it could handle in the round of 16 last spring, but the Aztecs (16-2, 2-0 Mountain West) have hardly missed a beat. Wins … Read entire article »

Aztecs empty “the Pit” again!

Well, now I completely understand why Drew Gordon decided to go to New Mexico: he’s no good! In any event, the Aztecs post another strong win on the road and in the pit no-less. The bench pulled through tonight and at altitude that turned out to be an important contribution. Defense disrupted passing lanes; forced steals and  and snubbed Drew Gordon in the paint all night.  LB had 9 points, 2 assist and no turnovers for the night. I’ll stop short of calling this his break out game, but we needed him to contribute and he did so in solid fashion. Thames had 22 points and will go down as my player of the game. This win gives the Aztecs their 56th straight win over unranked teams. The Aztecs finished … Read entire article »
