ESPN’s Man-Crush over the Big East

It’s funny; I was listening to Dave and Doris commentate the St. Johns-Pittsburgh game and Dave was beside himself. Filled with the typical ESPN quasi-hyperbolic pontification over Big east teams; he continued to claim that St. Johns was relevant again; he tried to justify St. Johns lousy seasons of the past; and the dribble continued. I had to step back when he proudly proclaimed St. John’s relevance again with a 16-9 record; yet, there is SDSU: a Cinderella Story; a basketball season Hollywood would have had trouble contriving; a school and a season that has set the college basketball nation on fire west of the Rockies; and yet, not one mention of the team or the story. ESPN is a Joke. Fraught with subjective East Coast bias; mired … Read entire article »

Beat da Bears by 20 and go 9-0 for the first time in history!

WOW! A team that throttled New Mexico and were the PAC-10 champions last year, loses to SDSU by 20: 77-57. DJ Gay (14 points) is a second-half super hero and Billiy White (10 points) is simply marvelous-just marvelous; and man-oh-man James Rahon with 15 points with 3 count-em, 3′s in a row. This team is now poised to go 15-0 before Conference play. This is simply a good team-a damn good team. I’m just beside myself; its surreal and at 14 in the nation they may very well go higher-mayne 12th or 11th. The first win at Cal since 1941! Well, well, well how-bout them AZTECS!!! Aztecs are Bowl Eligible!!!

Where were you in 1998? That’s how long ago it has been since the were in their last Bowl game. Not any more, in 2010 they are in! Now, if your Brady Hoke the season is far from over. The Aztecs are 6-2 and have Colorado State next at home. As Brady Hoke continues to remind everyone after every game, SDSU is in-it to win-it: a MWC Championship that is. Congratulations Aztecs: you are going bowling! The Wyoming game was less than stellar, in fact, it was shades of the New Mexico game: poor defense, sloppy special teams; errant offensive drives coupled with interceptions and a awful running game. Adding insult to injury, more replay booth controversy when Wyoming got away with a touchdown when the replay officials once again got … Read entire article »

DeShawn Stephens going to SDSU!

DeShawn Stephens, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound sophomore at Santa Monica (Calif.) College de-commits from Utah State and heads south to SDSU. With prospect Bryant Crowder out of the picture, this stands to be a great pick-up for SDSU. His athleticism will merge well into Fisher’s offensive and defensive schemes. He should see many minutes early in next year’s campaign. Looks as if Mr. Fisher has found his replacement for Billy White. With the true freshman Labradford Franklin and Jamal Franklin along with James Rohan, the class of 2011-12 is shaping up to be another explosive team. Oh, and if Kawhi makes the right decision by staying for his Junior year, well, all I can say is-WOW! Article viewed:130 … Read entire article »

The Best Frontcourts in College Basketball: SDSU at No.9

Predicting the best frontcourts in the nation before a season can be tougher than correctly forecasting the stock market. Most of college basketball’s top big men turn pro after only a year or two, so it’s tough to find frontcourts that combine experience and star power. You have to try to decide which freshmen will live up to expectations or which long-range projects will show the greatest improvement. 9. SAN DIEGO STATE Key performers: Brian Carlwell (6-11/300, Sr.), Kawhi Leonard (6-7/225, Soph.), Tim Shelton (6-7/245, Jr.), Malcolm Thomas (6-9/220, Sr.), Billy White (6-8/235, Sr.) The buzz: San Diego State returns just about everybody who helped them rank 10th in the nation in rebound margin last season. Leonard earned first-team All-Mountain West honors as a freshman and averaged 12.7 points and 9.9 rebounds to … Read entire article »

Jim Sterk has suddenly become a wanted man

This story originally published on Cougfan.com SHORTLY AFTER Larry Scott unveiled the particulars of the new Pac-12, CF.C placed a call to former Washington State — and current San Diego State — athletic director Jim Sterk. The question we wanted to ask was succinct: Is your phone ringing off the hook with calls from the 509, 206 and 503 area codes? The fact Jim hadn’t called back by the time this column was filed hints at the likely answer. With the conference’s north-south divisional structure, WSU, Washington, Oregon and Oregon State won’t play football games in Los Angeles every year. That’s the only downside to the new league alignment. Instead of getting to this rich recruiting area annually, it’s now going to be on an every-other-year basis because the two L.A. … Read entire article »

Norman Powell: Verbal Commitment with UCLA

SDSU is a Pre-season Top-25 basketball juggernaut; UCLA is basement dwelling basketball program on life support. SDSU is right in Norman Powell’s backyard with a prolific coach at the helm. SDSU is getting all the media attention and has NBA calipar super stars on its roster. SDSU’s offensive style is based on fast transition-breaks as well as a coach that has a conduit to the NBA power brokers called coaches. Why in the hell then, did Powell commit to UCLA! ! That decision will always remain a mystery but as far as I am concerned that man made a bone-head decision that I am sure was predicated on the UCLA head coach promising “hope and change”. Yeah, we have all heard that somewhere before. Good luck Powell, your going to need it! Article viewed:122 … Read entire article »

Utah and BYU: Dumb and Dumber!

If there is one thing I cannot tolerate its irrational exuberance. First, we had Utah, the burgeoning step-child and recent “second-choice” acquisition into the desperate  PAC 10.  Now, of all things, we are witnesses to a shining example of what happens when too many pseudo-intellects huddle into one room and play what-if scenarios. This is a classic example of Dumb and Dumber! BYU has managed to conjure-up a scenario that delivers grandeur’s of fame and fortune by becoming a rogue independent. Outstanding! Not only does their selfish, self-deprecating act compromise their ability to reach a championship game-ever; but, it seals the fate of the MWC’s chances of receiving BCS eligibility sooner rather than later-if ever! Utah decided that they ought to compete against the likes of UCLA and USC to improve … Read entire article »
