Nick Sherry gets an offer!

Mar 30

Nick Sherry was recently offered a full scholarship from SDSU. He is a prototypical QB at 6-4, 220 lbs. This would be a good pick-up, considering the other schools that are interested in him: Arizona, UCLA and USC to name a few.

Brady Hoke comments on Spring Training

Mar 21

Brady Hoke, the Head coach of SDSU gives a brief overview of his take on spring training. According to Coach Hoke, the Safety position group has improved with young standouts such as Marcus Andrews, Andrews Preston and Gabe Lemon to name a few are hard hitters and quick to the ball.  Branden S has been moved to fullback position in the two-back setup which according to Hoke is an improvement. Moving Ernie Lawson to defensive end from tackle has been a good move and Hoke has seen improvement in the defensive line and rushing attack as a result.

Aztec lose a close one; man this one was a tough one!

Mar 20

Tennessee Vols win a close one against SDSU in round one of the NCAA tournament. I’m left scratching my head wondering what it will take for this team to finally crack the proverbial and seemingly  insurmountable block of Ice. So close, yet so far is the moniker that rings through my head since the loss over 24 hours ago. I felt enough angst and discontent that I intentionally refrained from initially commenting on my own blog for I might lash out and say something that I would regret.

Having watch this team for 20 years there is one thing that remains certain, the pain of losing grows deeper and more frustrating. Yes, this team accomplished a lot given this was suppose to be a “rebuilding” year. Yes, the team reached a rank of 28th nationally and won their 3rd MWC title since the inception of the MWC. Yes, this team has 3 potential NBA players on its roster and a National recognized coach. However, they are now 0-6 in the NCAA tournament.

That last and most infamous statistic continues to trouble me and I am sure others. Why? Well, we are the fans; and the fans have expectations and those expectations evolve as does the team. The team is evolving but at a pace that is now becoming somewhat uncomfortable for the fan to endure. I am one of those fans that remembers the days of 5-23 and a last place finish in the WAC. The team is now sporting 20+ winning seasons at will, and that is great-in fact, its down right impressive. However, back too that expectations thing again; we the fans are now hungry for the reputation and ranking that comes with the title of being an Elite Team. What will it take for the Aztecs to achieve this elitism so desired by its fans; well, ostensibly, it will start by consistently appearing in the tournament year-after-year. Then, and most importantly, winning tournament games. Unfortunately that has yet to happen; and, we will have to wait yet another year before fans like you and I can (while anxiously and inextricably holding are abated breaths)see that first and highly prized NCAA tournament game win.

In closing, it has been an exciting and somewhat surprising year for the Aztec fans. The basketball team did good; they exceeded the most optimistic of expectations–and then some. So for that I congratulate the SDSU Basketball team. Yet, I close the books on this year consumed with melancholy on what could have been; what might have been, if the Aztecs had only won that first tournament game.
