SDSU Basketball is good; so good, teams are afraid to play them

Jul 29

When I read articles that tell the story of Coach Fisher’s struggles to schedule formidable opponents, I reminisce over the Fred Trenkle era and just laugh. What a difference a decade makes; SDSU Basketball, the once basement dweller of the NCAA; the laughing-stock of the Collegiate Basketball Aristocrats, has now grown up and guess what: no buddy wants to play with them. Ask Fisher why he is having difficulties scheduling teams to play his squad, and the response is somewhat incredulous:   “They all say: ‘We’re not going to play you, no way,’ ”

I remember going to Cox Arena when it first opened and watching games with about 2000 fans in the Arena. You could purchase a nose-bleed seat and move to a court-side seat by half-time: Ahhh…yes, those were the (infamous) days. Now, the Arena is filled to capacity for most home games; good tickets come at a premium and you better get them early or your going to miss out. But now what seemingly seemed so inconsequential in the past is now an arduous, laborious task: completing the 2010-11 schedule.  Coach Fisher struggles to get teams to commit to play. They simply reject the offer on the grounds that SDSU is too good.

For those critics who had questioned Fisher’s ability to take SDSU to the next level; what say you now? It’s humorous when reflecting over the sport critic(s) who got it completely wrong (i.e., ESPN)–about Fisher that is.

Uh-Oh UTAH! Now your nothing more than an easy win.

Jun 18

UTAH moved to  the PAC-10, betraying the MWC and all but liquidating any chance of the MWC from receiving an AQ to the BCS in the near future. Good job UTAH; the MWC thanks you for deploying the opposite of what you say and mean disease. For years UTAH decried fowl against the BCS; voicing their vociferous disposition against the BCS regarding the unfair and arguably illegal bias of the BCS against the “lessor” conferences who seek BCS eligibility. Ostensibly, the MWC was one of those conferences. Now, UTAH has freed themselves from such scrutiny and unfairness by accepting the roll as the red-headed step child of the PAC-10.

Now, UTAH can cease campaigning on behalf of the MWC; now they can be who they really are: a hypricrital institution who sold themselves to the highest bidder regardless of whether or not they were the second, third or the 40th choice! This is tantamount to being invited by an acquaintance to attend a party after finding out that his first choice could not make it. Message to UTAH: the PAC-10 did not give a damn about you before Texas said no! Please UTAH fans, your school did not improve the PAC-10 power index; it simple gave them a champion conference game of which you will not be participating in–ever!

UTAH is now destined to be a third or fourth place team in the PAC-10; rather than a championship team that would have helped build a powerful BCS eligible conference, and made just as much money after re-negotiating TV contracts. UTAH is nothing but a financially-driven whore that screwed nine other schools in the process (no pun intended) to achieve its self-serving agenda. Good Job UTAH: I’ll be looking forward to relishing in the fact that the grass just got browner for you and the pretentious, near-sided administration of yours. The UTAH football and Basketball programs are destined to be nothing more than mediocre, whipping-boys for the PAC-10; as well as, a schedulers dream for the elite programs. That is to say, an a EASY win!

Joe Lunardi’s Incompetent Prediction about SDSU

Mar 9

Every time I allow myself to watch ESPN (albeit briefly), I immediately feel the anger consume me. Mr. Lunardi decided that his prediction about SDSU making the tournament was based on SDSU beating New Mexico in the Championship game. I’m not sure how this can happen, since both these teams could very well play each other in the SEMI-FINALS you DUMMY! You know Lunardi, you could at the very least spend 5-minutes and look at the damn brackets for the MWC tournament before making an idiot of yourself. However, I am not surprised over this considering the source. I often wonder if anyone of the so-called Basketball experts from ESPN believes that there are Basketball teams west of the Mississippi river.

UNLV next…YES!

Feb 11

I drool over this game every year; and this year is no exception. I take great satisfaction over the fact that SDSU swept these losers last year and will relish in the victory at vejas this year. UNLV no longer has “wink the fink” so, unfortunately I will have to assign a new UNLV player to the club of ridicule and contempt. Haven’t decided to whom that belated title goes to yet; however, after Saturday I’m sure I will have my favorite. Admittendly, UNLV has a “decent” team, certaintly worthy of the top 75 (LOL). I’m not sure who thought they were worthy of 23rd in the nation-but that’s a farce! Certaintly, after the pummeling they shall receive on Saturday, the polls will, hopefully, correct their egregious ranking error.

Ok, now for SDSU. Certaintly in trouble and once again, they have backed themselves into a corner. However, certain areas that were tagged as problematic (i.e., Free Throw Shooting and shooting from behind-the-arc) are starting to improve; although, ever-so slightly, they are improving. With that modest increase in team shooting percentage and Kawhi’s continued “Freshman of the Year” performances, look for SDSU to finish the conference with maybe one more loss.

Wins over BYU and UNLV will certaintly help the RPI; yet, it still will not be enough. The intrinsic NCAA committee bias is prevalent and will not go away anytime soon. Their biasness does not favor SDSU (never has), so, unfortunately SDSU fans, State will have to win the tourny to get into the NCAA’s. I mean, wins over both BYU and UNLV could be enough to tip the scales but don’t count on it.

I’ll be at the game on Saturday to jeer, taunt and slain the “wimP-and-prayer” UNLV fan with my truculent verbal lashing, whilst savoring over my beloved Aztecs as they destroy this team; moreover, it’s a game that seeks redemption for UNLV’s lucky win over the mighty Aztecs last month!
